I was always wondering howto create Desktop SSH shortcuts to reach my daily-use linux servers.

Finally i found an easy but somehow special method but it works =)

V1 - Textversion

Follow these steps:

  • Open TextEdit
  • Write your connection into the editor.
    • Example: ssh://user@yourhost.com
  • Select the line
  • Drag it from TextEditor to your Desktop
  • now you should have a file called: user@myhost.com.inetloc

Finally you should have your Desktop SSH Shortcut working as supposed. enjoy it.

V2 - Imageversion

Edit: Some images to explain it better

Step 1: Enter data in TextEdit

Step 2: Mark the text

Step 3: Drag the text to your desktop

Step 4: Result

Step 5: Rename the result and voila: nice launcher for your Dock or similar

Now some additional hints:

If you need to specify a port for your SSH connection just add an additional :myport to the string above before moving it to your Desktop

Example: ssh://user@example.com:100

Best regards
fidel
