About Mulberry:

Mulberry started off life as a software project that was really meant to help the author learn more about the internet and internet protocols used for email. However, it became much more than that and garnered support from a small (in internet terms) group of users and institutions many of whom relied on the product as their primary email tool.

Whilst it started as only an IMAP client and only on Mac OS, it has grown to cover not only other email protocols, but also calendaring and scheduling and is available on Mac OS X, Windows and Linux systems.

Adherence to standards is a key belief on the part of the developers, and active participation in the Internet Engineering Task Force and the standards process is an important aspect.

Ultimately the failure of the original company (for a whole host of reasons) was really a reflection of the fact that Mulberry had failed to grow a market share that could sustain the company in a market where free clients (of varying quality) are readily available.

Now Mulberry itself is free, though its future is still cloudy in terms of whether development will advance or not…

Quote from the project page:

The full code for Mulberry (Mac OS X, Windows and Linux) is now available as open source under an Apache 2 License. Full details available on the wiki.

So lets wait for the first new releases of that client….

Apple released 10.4.11 which caused several problems for bootcamp-beta users.

Quote from   macworld.co.uk:

Apple’s accused of giving some Mac owners a Judas Kiss with the release of Mac OS X 10.4.11.

Reports from sources indicate Apple may have shipped the software update with a bug that has a rendered some - but not all - systems inoperable.

The problem appears to affect older Macs set-up with a Boot Camp partition for running Windows. When running Software Update on some Macs, reports indicate users encounter an error message telling them: “Software Update has encountered an unexpected issue, you must restart.”

When restarting, users find their Mac partition hangs on the blue screen and they are unable to restart their Macs from either the OS X partition, or the Windows partition. Sources claim that Apple support staff suggest the only solution is to erase the entire drive and all data in order to resolve the problem.

Since my switch to 10.5 i have realized several small changes in OSX.

Today its related with: Image Capture & Using USB-Devices like Photo’s or SD-Cards, Card-Readers etc..

Since 10.5 each time i plugged in my card-reader the application “Image Capture” popped up and offered several Services like downloading ,erasing etc of the data.

Unfortunally i don’t like that kind of Automatic-services, so the question was: how to disable that behavior ?

Quite simple:

  • Insert your USB-Device
  • Image Capture opens up
  • Open Preferences of Image Capture
  • Select the option “No application” and enjoy the new -> old behavior.

In addition a thread on macosxhints about Image Capture app

If you ever have problems with your printer (driver or similar) you should consider to check out the Gutenprint Project

What is Gutenprint (quoted from the project page):

Gutenprint, formerly named Gimp-Print, is a suite of printer drivers that may be used with most common UNIX and Linux print spooling systems, including CUPS, lpr, LPRng, or others. These drivers provide high quality printing for UNIX (including Macintosh OS X 10.2, 10.3, and 10.4) and Linux systems that in many cases equal or exceed proprietary vendor-supplied drivers in quality and functionality, and can be used for demanding printing tasks requiring flexibility and high quality. This software package includes an enhanced Print plugin for the GIMP that replaces the plugin packaged with the GIMP, and Ghostscript and CUPS drivers, as well as Foomatic data supporting the Ghostscript driver.

Gutenprint has been renamed in order to clearly distinguish it from the GIMP. While this package started out as the original Print plugin for the GIMP, it has expanded into a collection of general purpose printer drivers, and the new, enhanced Print plugin for the GIMP is now only a small part of the package. Furthermore, the name Gutenprint recognizes Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of the movable type printing press. Finally, the word guten is the German word for good.

Gutenprint 5.0 incorporates extensive feedback from the beta and release candidate programs. It has been completely revised since the very popular Gimp-Print 4.2 series, and you should read this manual carefully.

Gutenprint supports only the printer part of multi-function devices (devices that typically include scanning, copying, and fax capabilities).

We recommend that all users who wish to use this package for general purpose printing use either CUPS or, if they use another printing system or no spooler at all, use Foomatic with the Ghostscript driver (both described below), rather than integrating the Ghostscript driver with self-made scripts or even manually typing in Ghostscript command lines. It is much simpler to manage with CUPS or Foomatic and its PPDs. CUPS provides an excellent web-based interface for easy printer administration, and all CUPS-enabled applications (OpenOffice.org, all KDE apps, etc.) and printing dialogs (kprinter, xpp, etc.) show all the options in easy to use GUIs. Please visit http://www.cups.org/ for information on downloading and installing CUPS.

Gutenprint currently supports over 700 printer models.

If you write code from time to time AutoPairs could be interessting for you, depending on your editor for sure.

Quote from project page:

AutoPairs modifies the behavior of certain keystrokes, to help you keep paired characters such as parentheses properly matched. For instance, when you type a left parenthesis, AutoPairs will type the right parenthesis and a left arrow for you, so that you are ready to type what goes between the parentheses. This and other pair macros can be turned on and off individually, and configured differently for specific applications.

AutoPairs is a system preference pane, as well as a background application. It will not be visible in your Dock.

Version 3.0 is a Universal Binary, and has been rewritten with newer techniques which should be compatible with Leopard. However, it is not compatible with Panther or earlier.

Version 3.0.1 fixed an incompatibility with non-U.S. Roman keyboard layouts, and adds options for inward-facing and right-facing guillemets.

Version 3.0.2 fixed problems with the caps lock key.

AutoPairs is not fully functional with Unicode keyboard layouts. I have reason to believe that Leopard will correct this.

Since Mac OS 10.5 (Leopard) the System Profiler application is able to display the burn-speed of a blank media/disc.

  • insert your media,
  • launch System Profiler,
  • click into the Disc Burning section.

You’ll see a Media section for the inserted disc, and the last line should show the potential burn speeds.

Hint is based on a Macosxhints post

If your wintendo boxs seems to be broken and you dont know what to do there are several things you CAN TRY.

  • Windows Repair function while booting from the CD. Click here for more informations on that topic
  • Run SFC (System File Checker) to replace system-files

I want to focus on SFC as it was new for me:

Here the SFC MS Doc for Windows XP
